Adoption Information

We ask that all persons interested in adopting a horse fill out an Adoption Application,
which will help us determine which horses would be suitable matches for which adopters, and likewise, which adopters would be good matches for certain horses.  We are working on getting a link up to download the Application directly, but for now please email us for a copy of the Adoption Application (which we have available in either Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF formats).
The completed Application may be returned to us through email, regular mail, or in person.

All adopters are required to sign our Adoption Contract,
which is in place to help ensure the safety of the horse's future.  We have 3 slightly different versions of the Adoption Contract: one for Regular Adoptions, one for Elderly/Special Needs Adoptions, and one for Feedlot Adoptions (for horses adopted through the "Urgent" page of the website).

A current copy of the Regular Adoption Contract's "Terms of Adoption" is provided below for potential adopters to read through.  The official Adoption Contract will be provided by SAHR, for both parties to sign, at the time of adoption.

To discuss any questions you may have regarding the Adoption Contract or Application, please feel free to contact us at any time.

Terms of Adoption

  1. Adopter agrees to pay the full adoption fee (amount stated above) and understands that the animal remains the legal property of SAHR until everything owed is paid in full. If full payment is not received within the timeframe stated above in the terms of the adoption fee, Adopter agrees to return the animal to SAHR and pay for all cost and fees involved (Vet- and inspection-fees, transport, etc.).

  1. Adopter understands and agrees that SAHR may retain possession of the brand inspection for the adopted animal for anywhere up to but no longer than 12 months after the finalization of the adoption, after which period of time the brand inspection and legal ownership shall be transferred over to the Adopter.

  1. Adopter agrees to adopt the animal as is.  All responsibility, risk, and liability for the care and control of the adopted animal shall transfer to Adopter from the date of signing this adoption contract forward, unless otherwise agreed upon in writing.  SAHR is not responsible or liable for any injury or damage caused by the adopted animal, nor is SAHR responsible for any veterinary, medical or other expenses incurred after the date of the adoption unless otherwise prearranged and agreed upon in writing.

Adopter assumes all responsibility for treatment of any and all existing conditions and those that may subsequently occur. If the adopted animal has a known medical condition it is listed as Addendum at the end of this agreement. By signing this agreement, Adopter acknowledges that they understand the extent of any medical condition(s) and the recommended treatment as specified in the Addendum. While SAHR makes every effort to provide all medical information, no guarantee can be or is made as to the health of any animal offered for adoption.  Adopter understands that all information (breed, age, etc.) about this animal is based on details provided by either the animal’s previous owners, a Veterinarian, or SAHR.

  1. Adopter agrees to any and all check-up visits, follow-up calls or emails made by SAHR in conjunction with this adoption agreement.  Any and all visits will be made by appointment only, to be scheduled within a reasonable timeframe after the request of SAHR.  Adopter understands that refusal of scheduling and/or allowing visits/check-ups within a reasonable timeframe may result in reclaiming the animal by SAHR as stated under Number 14 (below).

  1. Adopter agrees to assure this animal a loving home in which it will be provided proper food, fresh water, adequate exercise, a secure and safe living environment, and appropriate shelter at all times.

  1. Adopter agrees to provide veterinary care as needed, including all vaccinations, dewormings, and examinations required to maintain good health.  Adopter also agrees to provide regular hoof and dental care as defined by current industry standards.

  1. Adopter agrees that should they no longer be able to care for, decide to sell, or for any reason must relinquish ownership of the adopted animal, SAHR shall immediately be notified. The animal must either then be returned to SAHR or rehomed to a new adopter with the assistance and approval of SAHR.

SAHR will always accept returned animals for the duration of their lifetime, regardless of age or condition.

If the horse was young or untrained when originally adopted and has consequently received extensive training while in the Adopter’s possession (thereby increasing the value of the animal past the original adoption fee) the Adopter may be allowed to resell the animal to recoup time and expenses, but only with the approval and cooperation of SAHR.  SAHR must approve any new home, and the new adopter of the animal must sign a similar contract with SAHR in order to ensure the continued safety of the animal’s future.

  1. Adopter agrees that the animal, under no circumstances, shall be sold through auction or be sold to slaughter, through either the direct or indirect actions of adopter.

  1. Adopter agrees that this animal shall not be used for breeding purposes.  Under certain circumstances an exception may be made, but must be specifically discussed and approved with SAHR beforehand and agreed upon in writing.

  1. Adopter agrees to never allow this animal to be used for animal experimentation, premarin production, as rough stock in rodeos, or for cruel sports such as horse “tripping”.

  1. Adopter agrees to use safe, humane and ethical methods of handling and training when working with this animal.

  1. Adopter agrees to comply with all state and local laws and ordinances which pertain to the keeping of this animal.

  1. Adopter agrees that all information submitted to SAHR within the Adoption Application, Adoption Contract, interviews, emails, and phone conversations is true to the best of their knowledge.  Any false information given to SAHR concerning Adopter’s horse experience, intentions for this animal and/or the care of this animal would be a reason for reclaiming the animal by SAHR, as stated under Number 14 (below).

  1. Adopter agrees that this Adoption Contract represents the entire agreement between the two parties. No other agreements or promises, verbal or implied, are included unless specifically stated in this written agreement.

15.    This Adoption Contract is made and entered into in the State of Colorado, and shall be enforced and interpreted under the laws of this state. When Adopter and SAHR sign this contract, it will then be binding on both parties. Any failure to perform the foregoing agreement will constitute a breach of contract. In the event of any such breach of contract, Adopter authorizes SAHR to reclaim both possession and ownership of the adopted animal and agrees to relinquish custody of the adopted animal immediately upon request.  In the event that such action is necessary, Adopter hereby waives any claim for a refund of any kind for any fees and expenses that may have been incurred, and agrees to pay all necessary and reasonable costs incurred by SAHR in recovering the possession of the adopted animal, including all costs and attorney fees necessary to enforce SAHR’s rights under this agreement.  Adopter understand that Colorado maintains jurisdiction of this adoption agreement at all times, and hereby agrees to let Colorado law govern this adoption-agreement, regardless of the State in which Adopter lives in now, or will move to in the future.
