New Arrivals at SAHR

Page last updated on: Thursday, March 31, 2011

The following horses are newer arrivals to SAHR, and are currently being evaluated to determine what (if anything) they need to be made ready for new homes.  From here, they will be listed on either the Available Horses or Future Adoptable Horses pages.

Merlin

Sorrel Belgian gelding
Approx. 17+ hands
Estimated year of birth: 1991?

This elderly Belgian gelding was abandoned at our rescue (literally, we found him in our roundpen one morning), so we have no idea about his history.  He is definitely older, and is pretty skinny and lame in the front.  We had his badly overgrown hooves trimmed, and are keeping him on supplements to see if he will get more sound (now that his feet are in better shape).
We don't know yet what his future holds, so for now we will just keep working to get weight on him and make him more sound and comfortable.

Beaux

Palomino Quarter Horse gelding
Approx. 15.0+ hands
Estimated year of birth: 1985+

Beaux, named in honor of gift 'bows' because he was a special Christmas rescue, is an awesome older gelding we pulled from the slaughter feedlot right before Christmas.  He is definitely an older gentleman, aged at LEAST 26 years old, and he was extremely emaciated when we found him out at the feedlot.  We were worried about his prospects for recovery, due to the fact that he was so very thin, suffering from a bad case of strangles, and infested with lice and a few ticks... but we decided to give it a go because he seemed to be able to eay hay and pellets OK, and he still seemed pretty spry and sound (he even still had shoes on his feet!).  We figured worst case scenario, he wouldn't be able to be  brought back to health... but at least he would have good food, medical care, and lots of love for awhile and not suffer through a trip to the slaughter house.  And best case scenario... he would be doing as well as he is now.

Beaux has recovered well from his ailments, and has put weight on like a champ with JUST HAY and a little bit of senior feed as a supplement!  He has a little bit of weight left to gain, and if he continues to do this well, we will try him out very gently under saddle and see if he can still be lightly ridden.  We feel he would make an excellent kid's horse because of his super mellow personality and gentle manners.  Stay tuned for updates on Beaux, coming soon!

Jake

(photos coming soon)

Light sorrel Belgian gelding
Approx. 17.1+ hands
Estimated year of birth: 1998

Jake was rescued in early december, along with his teammate Emmit, who unfortunately was much older and passed away due to complications from his advanced age and poor health.  Jake was rather thin at the time, and had a bad case of lice and ticks.  He is pretty much recovered from those things, and his hair is starting to grow back from where he rubber it all out.  Now we are getting his feet back in to shape, and will be evaluating him under saddle soon.  He is a very nice boy with great ground manners, and we think he could be a very fun riding horse.

Tex

Bay roan registered Quarter Horse stallion (now gelded)
Approx. 15 hands
Year of Birth: 1998
This nice Hancock-bred Quarter Horse came to us as an owner surrender, and while he was a stallion when we got him, he is now gelded on is on his way to being up for adoption very soon.

He is supposedly broke to ride, and we will be officially offering him for adoption once we evaluate him.
