Updated: May 26th, 2008
Special Edition (Eddie) May 21st, 2008
Eddie's rescue was generously sponsored by Shirley Hoffman & Horses Forever. She is currently being fostered here at Shiloh Acres Horse Rescue while she begins her recovery.

3 year old Saddlebred filly
Approx. 15.2+ hands
Eddie was on a slaughter feedlot, and NOT available for sale to us... We only ended up being able to rescue her after she got both hind legs caught in a round bale feeder and injured herself so badly that she could not physically get on the truck to slaughter when it came to pick her and the other horses up. Horses Forever, a local Colorado rescue that specializes in Saddlebred horses, is generously taking responsibility for her rescue fees and vet bills. For now Eddie is staying at Shiloh Acres while we start her on the road to recovery.
Her right hind leg has 4 severe gashes to it, including 2 that have exposed the tendons in her leg. She has additional cuts, scrapes, and punctures on her left hind leg, but nothing too serious.
She is an absolutely gorgeous, sweet and well mannered horse, and we are all working hard and praying for a full recovery and happy ending for her.
Lizzie (Laurimar Queen Elizabeth) March 19th, 2008
(photo coming soon)
15 year old Clydesdale mare
Approx. 17.1+ hands
Laurimar Queen Elizabeth (Lizzie) is a registered Clyde mare that we pulled from a feedlot. She is broke to drive and ride, but had some soundness issues with her hind end that are currently improving. She is a very attractive, classic bay mare with a strong personality. She also has some trust issues regarding people that we are currently working with. She should hopefully be ready for adoption a little later on this summer...
Sadie March 4th, 2008 *Adoption Pending*
(photo coming soon)
Approx. 6-7 year old Appaloosa mare
Approx. 15 hands
Sadie was rescued off a slaughter feedlot along with another Appy mare, and both were heavily pregnant at the time. Sadly, Sadie went into premature labor, and her filly was born with many problems. Both mom and baby were taken to the CSU vet hospital and the filly was admitted to their Neonatal ICU center, but she just had too many problems to survive despite all the efforts to save her. Sadie has recovered from the birth and we will be finishing her evaluation under saddle soon. She is a wonderful little mare with a fabulous temperment and willingness to please.
Wren March 4th, 2008

Approx. 6-8 year old Percheron mare
Approx. 16.2+ hands
Wren is a feedlot rescue who appears to have been a broodmare for many years and has no training beyond being halterbroke. She is a pretty, smaller and lighter built Percheron with a very nice head and good solid legs and feet. She needs more work on her ground manners and in learning to trust people, but should be ready for a home sometime this summer. We will hopefully get her started in driving and riding before then.
Dallas March 3rd, 2008

5-6 year old Belgian gelding
Approx. 18 hands
Dallas is a feedlot rescue, and is reported to have come from the Amish and be broke to drive. He definitely has trust issues with people and can be very nervous, so we are working on that before getting him driving again. He is a very big, very flashy mover that would be a wonderful hitch horse once he is more comfortable with people. Dallas will hopefully be available for adoption soon!
Shelby February 20th, 2008

Approx. 2(?) year old bay paint filly
Approx. 13 hands
Shelby is another local auction rescue who was actually bought by a kill buyer when nobody else bid on her. We ended up with her, and hopefully will get her healthy and into a loving home soon.
Shelby is thin and has overgrown hooves. We also have noticed some popping motions and clicking sounds coming from one of her hocks, so we will be having that evaluated (if it doesn't clear up after getting her hooves back to normal angles). Fortunately she is halter broke, mellow, and very sweet. Somebody obviously took care of her at some point.
Stay tuned for updates on this special little girl!
Pandora February 13th, 2008 *Adopted!*

Weanling black Percheron/TB warmblood filly
Approx. 13 hands
Allegra December 28th, 2007
(photos coming soon!)
Allegra came to us from another local rescue who could no longer keep him. He is a stunning Mustang/Arabian cross gelding with a unique coloring that is best described as a "gray grulla". I don't think that is an actual color, but that's what I am calling it for now!
He sadly suffered a broken pastern (and no treatment for it) at the hands of a neglectful owner in the summer of 2007, before being turned over to the first rescue. At this late stage, all we an do is wait for the break to heal on its own, and the pastern joints to fuse together. He has had radiographs recently which show that the pastern joints are currently in the process of healing and fusing, but he will never be sound due to the fusion and the resulting ringbone and scarring. The vets think that he will fine to live as a pasture potato once he finishes healing, but will probably not have a normal lifespan due to the joint degenerating over time.
Allegra is currently on stall rest and limited turnout, but he is a happy-go-lucky boy who will still try to run and play if you let him! Hopefully he will be entirely healed soon, and can be turned out to live the rest of his life with other horses.
AJ *Adoption Pending* Rescued December 5th, 2007

3 year old grulla Appaloosa mare
Approx. 14.2+ hands
This striking little gal almost wound up in the kill buyers' hands at auction, which would have been a terrible shame as she is so young and has a whole life full of potential ahead of her. After treating her for some badly healing wounds that appeared to be from a run-in with a wire fence, she is on the road to recovery and has a wonderful home to go to in California this summer!
Corporate Kitty ("Kat") Rescued December 5th, 2007

Coming 8 year old Jockey Club registered chestnut Thoroughbred mare
Approx. 16.1 hands
Bred to a TB stud (but no breeding papers)
Kat is an elegant mare who we outbid the kill buyers for at auction. She is broke to ride and goes both English and Western, and apparently has a bit of jumping experience as well. She was reported to have been exposed to a stallion over the summer, and our vet confirmed that she is indeed with foal. His best guess was that she is 6-7 months along in her gestation.
We haven't done any riding with her yet as she has a bad crack to her left front hoof that is making her sore. Our farrier will continue to manage and treat the crack, and hopefully she will be sound for an in-depth riding evaluation soon.
Update February 24th: Kat is still unsound on the leg with the hoof crack, but we have also noticed some minor calcification in that knee as well. We will be taking her in for a lameness exam and radiographs shortly to see if there is any chance of her becoming riding-sound again.
John & Paul December 1st, 2007

24+ year old Draft geldings
17+ hands
These very handsome older gentlemen were surrendered to us by their owner. They are in very good health for their age, other than needing some farrier work and John having a bit of arthritis.
John is a Belgian/Percheron cross with a pretty red roan coloring, while Paul is a flashy sorrel full Belgian. They had been a driving team many years ago, and sometimes used for giving rides to children. We may try evaluating Paul under saddle to see if he would have the potential for light pleasure or trail riding.
Bullseye *Adopted!*

Yearling bay roan QH stud colt
Approx. 13 hands
Saved at auction, this sweet little yearling was severely emaciated and had badly overgrown feet. Within just a week of coming to the rescue, he was already putting on weight, had had his feet trimmed for the first time and was learning to lead. He has already been adopted by a wonderful family that is continuing his rehabilitation.
Gracie *Adopted!*

Approx. 14+ year old gray few-spot Appaloosa mare
Approx. 14.2 hands
Gracie came off a slaughter feedlot, where she had been horribly injured when she impaled herself on a piece of rebar protruding from the ground. The feedlot owner had to actually cut her off the rebar, as it was embedded deeply into her chest and she could not be lifted off of it. Our vet immediately sutured her up (it took over 120 stitches to close the 2 -foot gaping wound), but unfortunately she had lost too much blood supply to the tissue surrounding the wound and the stitches pulled out as the skin died off.
It took several months of daily cleaning and scrubbing of the wound to keep it from getting infected and to help it heal. She is left with a long, somewhat messy scar, but since her hair is already white, the scarring is not that noticeable. Overall, it healed up incredibly well considering what the wound looked like to begin with!
Not yet named...
(but nicknamed "Lumpy") Rescued October 12th, 2007

Coming 5-year old bay Jockey Club Thoroughbred gelding
Approx. 16.1 hands
"Lumpy" is an ex-racer rescued off a slaughter feedlot, along with a 2nd TB (listed below). Both of these handsome, sweet horses narrowly escaped slaughter TWICE: They had been loaded up and shipped to a slaughter plant in Canada, but something was wrong with the shipment's paperwork so the truck full of horses was refused and sent back to the Colorado feedlot to await shipment again...
Sometime during that ordeal, Lumpy had his skull broken just below his eyes. The healing fracture has resulted in a prominant bony bump below his forehead. He also has problems with both stifles (probably the reason he was retired from racing...) that we are first trying to remedy with exercise, but may eventually have fixed through surgery.
Lumpy is a very lovely horse with wonderful manners and a gentle temperment. With a little help, he should be able to have a great future as a riding horse.
Tenaja Trail Rescued September 25th, 2007

Year old chestnut Jockey Club Thoroughbred gelding
Approx. 17 hands
Tenaja is a slaughter feedlot rescue who was extremely underweight and unsound when we got him. He has piled on the weight quickly with good food and is doing very well now (aside from his very bad habit of cribbing everything around him!). His soundness issues seem to have resolved with proper hoof care, and soon we will be evaluating him under saddle. According to what history we could track down, he was raised in Kentucky and raced overseas in Europe for a year or two before returning to the States and retiring. He went on to do some jumping and eventing, and how he ended up in such bad shape on a slaughter feedlot is unknown.
Memphis Rescued September 18th, 2007

Approx. 15 year old seal brown Tennessee Walker gelding
Approx. 15.3+ hands
Memphis is a very handsome, eye catching Tennessee Walker saved from the slaughter feedlot. He is shy but sweet, and is sound...but we are finding that he has more troubles with his vision than we first thought (he seems to be mostly blind in one eye and somewhat visually impaired in the other) so we will be evaluating him further to determine if he can have a future as a riding horse.
